Hi all,

The rope seal on the door of my wood burner has started to fail so need to replace it. Question is what size rope do I get?

The groove is 12mm wide and the old rope seems to be 12mm too so first thoughts is.... a 12mm rope. On second thoughts though do I buy a soft 14mm rope so it fills the grove and maybe seals better?

Can anyone advise if there is a general rule of thumb with these things or not?

Cheers!

I'm not sure that 12/14mm is going to have that much of a benefit between them. I would personally stick to the size already fitted...

Thanks, I thought along the same lines. Although when we moved into our new place in November it was part of the deal the burner was left. Its about 2 years old and probably the original seal. Another thought for the slightly higher thickness was do they shrink over time?

How old is your woodburner? Rope seals used to be made of asbestos (for all I know yours is a couple of years old though)

Yea I did but found nothing.

I bought a 14mm rope today and what a waste of time that was. Fitted it this afternoon and it git really well into the groove but doesn't seem to have sealed the door. With the paper test the paper is barley held.

May be a 16mm rope? The hinge side seems to be worse which is whats making me thing its not the right size rope and I can adjust the handle making it tighter at the handle end but no difference to the hinge end.
