Rosberg retires with immediate effect

Saw this on BBC sport app on the tablet at work. Nah it's wind-up.
Flick on Sky Sports; ah yeah

Still say it's a windup.....

Me too

He'll appear on the last lap of the last race next season, crash in to Hamilton and retire his car and take the chequered flag, then declaring he struck a deal for x100 points so takes the title again

who are they going to have, the only stand out people were alonso and rbr drivers. Wherline despite scoring the only point for the team wasn't head and shoulders above team mates.
and Max/Ric i'm sure would be sketchy about leaving as rbr is the next best team and with stronger aero next year could be even closer. although engine is still a factor even with far less development restrictions.
suppose it depends if they want just a secure 2nd man or someone who could challenge LH.

JB outside chance, sure he would love it, but other than giving merc a year to find another driver, doesn't do anything for the team, so i would be shocked if he gets anywhere near negotiations.

Vet is a good choice, and would love to see that pairing, he is obviously unhappy at Ferrari and cant see Ferrari being on form for another few years while they keep sacking people rather than building the team back up.

Very much so, without hitting Hamilton twice and all the reliability against Hamilton he'd have never won. He won't get away with another team mate contact I don't think without a race ban at this point, the chances of having 4 races uncontested due to qualifying issues and a 28 point net gain due to an engine failure in race is... slim to none.

He won't beat Hamilton again and he'll never be in a top team without a better driver in it to compete against him. If he stays at Merc, merc would only replace Hamilton(if they did and at some stage) with a top top driver, Verstappen or whoever gets big in the next few years as frankly Merc know Rosberg isn't good enough to win a title if the Merc wasn't so dominant.

If Rosberg left Merc for another bigger team it would be strictly as a no.2 driver for exactly the same reasoning. If Ferrari, RBR or Mclaren want to win a title, assuming just a competitive car they need a driver better than Rosberg.

He fluked a title, the few people that think he did it on merit and not extreme luck added to some naughty driving will only continue to think that if he retires and isn't beaten continuously going forward.

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway - Mercedes to offer Williams a sack of cash/free engines for Bottas? Then Wehrlein to Williams?

Wehrlein stepped in for lewis on the tuesday, Nico stated that he made his decision on monday, i wonder if Merc "asked" Lewis to step aside for the test so they could put on a last minute evaluation drive for Wehrlein?

Purely speculating here!

It would make sense - they did something similar in the Barcelona test after Hamilton threatened to quit.

I agree, nothing brave about it. Got a bit of a good fortune with Hamilton's mechanical failures and bottled it. Brave would be defending the title.

I think Hamilton was at the last test.

edit "Lewis Hamilton handed over to Pascal Wehrlein after he felt unwell" I think your right.

The only downside, no one will remember him in a few years time, he won't have the following drivers like Schumacher, Hamilton, Alonso, Mansell, Senna, Frost and others have for being multiple world champions.

Just like his dad.

It all makes sense now, I think he was going to quit beginning of the season no matter the outcome, hence why LH had so many break downs and Rosberg got mouth fed and defended throughout. He wanted to be WC and got placed besides LH, he knew he never stood a chance under normal circumstances. Might as well quit while he's ahead. Bet LH had a bit of a chuckle.

Of course he did...hamilton fans seriously still peddling the conspiracy theories?

Good luck to him, he had the luck on his side and won. Doesn't care about a legacy and had his own goals which he achieved. Fair enough. Enjoy retirement and hopefully next year a real battle for WDC not just at mercedes but across the board.

My theory....:D
Theory only...thought I'd throw a conspiracy out there seen as there have been a few floating around this season.

This season has been scripted from the beginning...Mercedes agree to let Rosberg win the championship only if he retires at the end of the season...a German wins in a German car.
However, Hamilton is not initially involved with this agreement for obvious reasons.

Hamilton experiences 2x poor starts, 2x mechanical issues and then the silver arrow smash in Spain...he threatens to quit (http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/24...eaten-to-quit-mercedes-after-spanish-gp-crash).

It is broken to him then, that this Rosberg Championship deal has been brokered and that he is to toe the line, he will get his chance again after Rosberg leaves.

Then as the season progress' it is scripted to make it look like Hamilton is 'just having a bad day at the office' in terms of reliability. Capping it off with a brand new engine blowing up in Malaysia, the final nail in his championship bid.

Hamilton can't rock the boat fully, as he knows he still has a future with the team...tens of millions still to be made and maybe a few more championships before he retires but still has to have the odd dig, and 'moan' about the issues with reliability.

Then comes the final race. By this point Mercedes have won the Constructor Championship by miles and Rosberg is Champion if he comes at least 4th or above, if Hamilton wins.

Hamilton knows this, and has the almost perfect tactic, slow down in the slow section and push Rosberg back into the Ferraris/Red Bulls. He cannot do this straight away, because he has been warned that if he does this, they'll pit Rosberg first allowing for the undercut. So he bides his time, waiting until the final pit stops are completed. He then implements his plan. -- Now to us, we think that the Championship is still up for grabs and Mercedes have always said they will let them race ---- As Hamilton acts upon his plan, it becomes obvious to those on the pit wall that, this deal could fall though during the final race. They will not have their German champion. To throw Hamilton off slightly they point out the threat Vettel poses...he was quick and could possibly overtake for the lead...but I don't think he had the time, not for 1st. This makes Hamilton check himself, he speeds up for a couple of laps, only then to slow back down again once he realises that Vettel isn't threat to him, that he is only a threat to the Mercedes deal. This is when you get Paddy Lowe wade in with his 'instruction', which to me as the oblivious spectator, does not understand because the team have nothing really to loose. LET THEM RACE!

However, by this point it's too late, Vettel's tyres loose there grip and even Max starts to struggle. It ends Hamilton - Rosberg, and Mercedes have their German Champion in a German Car.

Now also note Hamilton's demeanour at the end of the race. He still was smiling, even congratulated Rosberg...none of which I would have expected! Was he smiling because he knew he was going?
That actually Rosberg was never truly a champ!

Who knows eh?! :D
