Rosberg retires with immediate effect

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2016/7/f1-rosberg-signs-new-mercedes-deal.html

Of course he did...hamilton fans seriously still peddling the conspiracy theories?

Good luck to him, he had the luck on his side and won. Doesn't care about a legacy and had his own goals which he achieved. Fair enough. Enjoy retirement and hopefully next year a real battle for WDC not just at mercedes but across the board.

Clearly contracts don't mean much do they. No LH fan here he's right up his own arse, but compared with Rosberg....

I think it'll likely be Bottas.

Still managed by Toto, they'll give Williams Wehrlein in return and a big discount on engines for the year.

Vettel's performance clause in the Ferrari may have been triggered however...

Brave would be defending the title.

Would it?

If he lost, the baying Lewisterical fanboy brigade would say that it proves he was always rubbish and Lewis is the best and Lewis is better than everyone else on the grid and so on, endlessly.

If he won, that same baying Lewisterical fanboy brigade would find some way to make it about the team/Rosberg/other drivers/whothe****ever screwing Lewis out of the title because they're cheats and they know Lewis is the best really and they cheat waaah waaaaah waaaaaaaaah.

:p:D

Better to go out on top, chill, enjoy family life and let someone else have a go at The Messiah™ in what will (in all likelihood) still be the best car on the grid next season barring a minor miracle at the Scuderia or the Renault engine people at Viry-Châtillon getting their **** together.

I could see them going for Vettel if its not a young driver to get the seat. He's German, pretty handy and the fans like him. (Unless he wins a lot again.. lol)

Are we sure Rosberg isn't just trolling us all?

I doubt Mercedes would go with Werhlein. He's shown to be quick at times but also shown complete disregard for his team too. Add to that next year is an unknown with the new rules. Merc might not have the best package, and might need two top drivers to fight for the constructors championship which is the only one that matter by the way.

I'd say it leaves them in a bit of a pickle, but then I imagine Toto's phone is ringing off the hook from managers and agents at the moment.

One thing we do know is that it's made the off season a little more interesting. I bet Lewis is not happy at all.

Why would merc want another top driver in the team?

They've got Hamilton and if they've got the best car again next season and give him a reliable car, whoever they put in the other car isn't going to matter too much.

Hamilton will win the championship and the No. 2 driver should bag enough points go get them the team championship again.

They should do what Ferrari did with Schumacher, and have a clear number 2 driver in the other car to avoid the problems they've had over the last 3 years.

Putting Vettel, Alonso, Max or Riccardo in the other car is asking for problems they don't want or need.

but theres a reasonably big rule change and as such they may not be so dominate next year, in which case having to top drivers is beneficial.

After the way Vettel scuttled away from Red Bull after Riccardo showed him up I can't imagine he really relishes getting schooled by Hamilton. After an uninspiring showing at Ferrari, going toe-to-toe with Hamilton in the same car would be a real do-or-die for his reputation. Vettel wants to be lead driver in a race winning car, going to Mercedes offers him the race winning car but going against a better driver. I don't see him going for it.

Personally I'd like to see Hulkenberg take the seat.

One of my favourite drivers on and off the track, probably the most likeable German also.

I would like to see Ricciardo, Sainz or Verstappen in that merc seat. Max and Lewis on same team would be epic battle to the death with drama on and off the track. but seeing as RBR wouldn't even let Sainz go to Renault (their engine supplier) - I think that will never happen

it really only leaves Alonso or Vettel, as I am sure they have opt out clauses in their contracts -> something like give me a podium car which they really haven't had

I doubt Ocon and Wehrlein would be Merc first choice, they are rookies. but it could be Merc's only choice so late in silly season.

best for F1 would be Max at Merc and Sainz at RBR

my bet is dark horse Perez, I bet Merc can have some sway with Force India

my 2 cents

My theory....:D
Utter twaddle
Who knows eh?! :D

Yeah so on the Nico retirement thread, the Nico haters are out in force, even to the point of scripting theories of his demise.
Haters truly will hate.

I find it an interesting decision to retire, but I wonder if given the chemistry between Nico and Lewis, that Nico simply couldn't be bothered putting up with the stress and the animosity from the other side of the pit anymore.
Wouldn't be surprised if the other sulk now is nice as pie to him going forwards.
It was an interesting tweet he published after he would have found out, almost an olive branch.

IF Mercedes knew this might happen, and IF they wanted the other Nico in the second seat, surely a quiet word to Hulk's manager at some point would have seen him not sign the Renault contract? Either they didnt want him, or this really was a bolt out of the blue for Toto, Paddy and Niki. Or they're happy to take Pascal.

Bottas could happen, AFAIK His williams seat hasn't actually been announced has it?
