Rotary telphone with xlr connector

Mum bought an old rotary phone and I noticed someone has put an xlr (male) connector on it.

Anyone know why someone would do that?

If it’s the only cable coming out the phone then it’s likely just to be used for whatever the building had at the time to patch in phones. I would imagine xlr would be more robust than normal so maybe it’s just for that reason. It’s only a few wires for a phone so any connector would suffice.

More I think about it, vehicle installation maybe? Like military?

I wonder if it's been used in a theatre piece or music performance with the XLR actually wired to the phones mic.
