Hi,

Considering moving into a student apartment with my girlfriend next year - Prices are a little more than we expected but depending how much utility bills cost it may still be in range!

Does anybody have any idea how much an average set of utility bills (Gas, water, electric) would cost for a small apartment (1x bedroom, 1x lounge/kitchen, 1x bathroom) in Nottingham.

I am aware that the cost will vary with usage however after any reasonable estimates that I can use to assess whether we have the necessary funds to start looking for a place.

Many Thanks.

Dan.

If it helps I live in a 3 bedroom flat with 2 mates, a kitchen, living room etc and 2 of us are heavy pc users. gas and electricity combines comes to about £200 every 4 months.

Me and gf live in a 2 bed flat we pay a flat amount every month by direct debit but at the end of the year taking into account gas usage in winter/summer which varies a lot we end up paying enough for the years usage of both, ours are 21 per month electricity and 22 per month gas.

We use next to no gas through summer, maybe 5 pounds every 3 months as we dont use the heating and we cook with electricity so it evens out over the year, as in the winter that rises quite a lot.

As for electricity i think we use about what we pay which as i said it 21 per month.

Water is metered and we pay 16.50 per month and i think we slightly go over, maybe closer to 19 per month which isnt far off what we payed in water rates really before we got the meter.

Its the internet/sky/phone which is the most expensive we find utlity bills arent that mush as long as you are sensible with them, which i am

I searched on previous threads for this and put everything into an excel spreadsheet, to see how much I would need to earn in a job to pay the bills, these are the averages I got:

Council tax - £94
Water - £22
Electric - £38
Gas - £34
House insurance - £22
Food - £212
Landline/broadband - £38
TV license - £11

From the top of my head.

Gas & Electricity: £57/month (gas central heating)
Water: £20/month

I would say thats spot on for a house, maybe then you just add sky tv on etc if you have that + other small things but thats the crux of it + mortgage, basically an utter fortune :)

With regards to elec and gas, you will pay a level amount through the year if you pay by DD. This will take into account summer and winter usage.

Are you still a student? Do you need to pay council tax?

Best to have money aside for a rainy day and possibly life insurance too.

Hey,

Thanks for the replies - Certainly more than I thought... The accommodation appears to be coming up at ~£550 (for the both of us) per calendar month... Soon adds up!!

We will both be students so we will be exempt from council tax but otherwise I think everything on that list needs to be considered.

Many Thanks.

Dan.

For me:

£50 per month gas and electric
£100 council tax (with single person discount cause GF is student). Includes water charge
£15 internet
£14 phone (includes calls)
£9.50 contents insurance
erm......think that's it

2 bed flat I pay about £23 per month for electricity and £14 for gas. Water is expensive because we don't have a meter and that's about £320 per year, half that if you have a meter.

2 bed flat with 2 of us. Bills come to

£232 for the both of us.

Includes -
council tax
Telewest (£30) ( 3 for 30)
Gas
Electric
Water
Sewage

Do you really need house insurance?

contents insurance (incl. laptop anywhaere in uk) is £55 per year - bargain = Saxon insurance - mainly for students.
