The reason I ask this question is I've got a Corsair HX1620 which I've had for so long, I've forgotten exactly how may years its been. Its still going like a champ and is nice and quiet so basically whats the expected lifespan of a psu nowadays?

How long's a piece of string? There's no real answer. If you look at EVGA's high end psu's they give a 10 year warranty so they expect them to last that long. Other's have a 5 year warranty while cheap ones typically have a 3 year warranty. My last psu was 7-8 years old and it's still going strong in my other pc. Caps inside them degrade as they age and being that old and the fact that I was going for SLI 670's at the time I replaced it. I would certainly expect a high end psu to last at least 5-7 years.

Usually with the quality units once they get past the early failure window they will likely last you for years and cover the warranty period easily. EVGA are offering 10 year warranty on some of their units after registration.

I bought two Enermax 620W's (for two different PCs) ~10 years ago. One of them just popped this year... that little fella had a very good innings and served me through many PCs / ugprades.

So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Quality PSUs really are the best investment you will ever make for your PC.

I had an old corsair, can't recall, for maybe 8 years without issue. However I've had 3 go on me in the last 18 months - they have always replaced them but it's been a real pain.

So since swapped to the superflower leadex platinum 1000w as they seem to come very highly rated. i'm expecting this to last a while!

About 18 years ago, I purchased 3 very cheap identical PSU's for some PC's I was building.

2 of the PSU's failed with in a week, the remaining 3rd PSU was still working 18 years later. In fact the PC with the remaining PSU was recently sold as a retro DOS gaming PC!

My old seasonic oem corsair hx 850 is still going strong in a mates system after 7 years. In the time I had it it powered several oc'd sli setups. Bought it secondhand on here when it was around 9 months old. But I've had a few other decent psu's in other systems pack in anything from first time switched on to several years.

Difficult to answer

Personally I buy something with about 20% more power than I need , that way the PSU is not running full tilt all the time

I would say 8 years would be about right for a decent branded one

AFAIK a Seasonic S12 430w is still going strong in my sisters PC & that is about 8 1/2 years old. It's been in a number of PC builds & gone from case to case. Apart from a broken sata cable, it hasn't missed a beat.
