Why do some people fully stop at a roundabout and then look to see if anything is coming.

Happens a lot where I live and does tend to be the older generation.

My wife does this. It drives me absolutely nuts. And of course if you want to keep the peace you dare not offer up constructive criticism on a woman's driving. :p

Because I do not want to risk SMIDSYing a cyclist/motorcyclist (especially at night)

Also, especially on busy mini roundabouts, It is important to actually look at the other traffic to be sure of what their intentions are.

One near me (where I frequently have to make right turns) is plagued by people flying in from the left and paying no attention to my right turn indicator because they have simply glanced rather than actually looked.

And the indicators on my old Landcruiser are a good 10 square inches of yellow lens, not a poxy little coloured bulb hiding inside an otherwise clear lens like on many modern cars, so there is no excuse for missing them

(I have become quite adept at spotting the ones that are not going to stop and stopping myself with my Bull Bars 6" away from the errant drivers door as they go past!)

Also, remember, Older people are likly to have poorer eyesight. Still well within the legal requirements, but perhaps not as good as when they were younger. So yes, shock horror as people recognise their limitations and are careful about ensuring that they drive within them :p

Oh, and to add, Also re mini roundabouts. I wish to approach slow enough so the people to my left have a chance to see that I am there and have an opportunity to give way. Far to many people simply glance right and say to themselves "Ooo I can go" giving no thought to the visibility for and ability to react of traffic joining from the left.

Just to be pedantic, I think you need to qualify the circumstances a bit. An empty roundabout with clear visibility, then sure keep going. One with traffic on or a load of untrimmed shrubbery blocking the view: a bit more of an issue.

I will not trust anyone's signalling on a roundabout, so if they are indicating to turn off onto the road I'm joining from, I won't move onto the roundabout until I see them actually turning in. This probably means I'm an annoying numpty who stops, however I'm not being the one at fault in an accident by making a bad assumption on what the other guy is doing.

Also, what car do you drive?

There's a roundabout in Portsmouth where there's zero visibility in the MX-5 due to shrubbery, but in the Mondeo you can see over it.

Got beeped the other day because I stopped when it was clear but I simply couldn't see - no doubt the **** in the 4x4 behind me had a perfect view…

I actually got a minor on my test because I didn't stay in 2nd gear and keep moving onto the roundabout at the pace of the traffic infront of me - was a bit of an unfair one as they were doing work on the inside lane of the roundabout which was coned off for the half of the roundabout to my right and kicking up enough dust I couldn't clearly see what was coming from my right :|

Because especially mini roundabouts you cant be trusting that the fella to the left of ye knows to give way.

Had a couple of close calls with that, *dons flamesuit* and its almost always been cycling enthusiasts who give you a look of death as your forced to screech to a halt to not run them over.

Because most drivers cannot forward plan only react.

Same reason most drivers scream up to traffic lights and sit there for the duration of a red rather than roll off the throttle and roll up until they change to green.

I don't pull out until people are actually on their way off the roundabout any more. Not after some idiot in a bus indicated to turn off, started to turn and then suddenly decided to keep going round. By then I had already started going and he missed me by inches :/

Here's a good one. You have to come to a complete stop here as unless you're in a van/lorry you can't see over it.

Lack of road awareness and concentration. It's what most motorists do, sadly. They get to a point and then think right, what do I do now. So few people read the road, their fragile little minds simply can't work that way.

i think at some age you have to take your test again.
a lot of old folk can hardly see, walk yet still get behind the wheel.

Morons who are supposed to stay in the outside lane while going straight across and instead cut into the inside lane and cutting people up is worse. Lane discipline is non-existant around here.

Pretty much get that all the time in and out on the dualie into Aberdeen.

It doesn't help that they didn't build the roundabouts big enough to actually mark them with two lanes, but still some people seem to think you're in the wrong being alongside them on the roundabout.
