No, they’re not great for removing lock nuts.

Drill it out, weld a sacrificial socket to it, or hammer a smaller socket on it.

A sacrificial socket wanged on is a lot cheaper than £38 for one

Last time I had to do this, I walloped a deep 12 sided imperial socket over it with a lump hammer and removed the nut using that.

I've used something similar to bail me out in a few occasions. We'll worth the money as it makes the job much easier.

Depends on the way the alloys are. I had to drill out a stud once because there wasn't anyway to get anything on it to get it out.

In that situation I can recommend dormer drill bits. They are the dogs danglies.
