Router / Access point question

Hi All

I am trying to get get wireless coverage downstairs in our building.

Upstairs we have the phone socket, and the router is plugged into this, and this gives us coverage upstairs fine.

I can use the buildings internal CAT5 to get the network signal as it were downstairs, and if I plug a laptop into the port downstairs, I get internet fine.

So my ( sorry its basic ) question is . Do I need a router to throw out wifi downstairs, or an access point. I would prefer to use a router as there are plenty that have parental controls, which is what we want for downstairs.

Whichever piece of equipment I need, how do I go about telling it to use the network signal from the cable, and get it to throw it out as wireless ?

Thanks

Mehul

Get a router. Set the router's IP address to a valid address on your network. Disable it's internal DHCP server and set the wireless settings EXACTLY the same as the wireless settings upstairs. Then wire one of the routers LAN ports (NOT THE WAN PORT) to the socket in the wall.

This will essentially just give you access point functionality. You could buy an accesspoint but it is often cheaper to use a router and do what i have mentioned.

As for parental controls, you would need to ideally set them on the upstairs router and just make rules for the specific devices you want to control.

Ok, got the router in the post today . . . . Netgear N600

It is effectivley linked to the BT homehub via a run of ethernet, plugged into one of its 4 ywllow LAN ports.

It is asking for Ip address, subnet mask etc - where do I get these from ? From the homehub ?
