Hi All

This follows on from an earlier thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18289679.

Essentially, we have our BT socket with BT business broadband upstairs - i.e the Business hub.

It is connected through the CAT5 running through the building to the downstairs reception area. They are quite far away, and so there is no conflict in terms of wi-fi etc etc.

I have a cable connected from the back of the BT router through the building CAT5 to the socket in the reception area. I then have a length of cat5 from the socket to the back of a hub we have just purchased - a netgear N600 router.

I have turned DHCP off as suggested, but am stuck as to what to enter as th IP address, subnet mask etc etc on the Netgear router.. Do I need to get these from the BT business hub ? There is nothing else on the network in terms of wired devices etc etc.

Okay, on the BT Hub, change the DHCP range to 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.250.

On the N600, set the LAN IP address to 192.168.1.253, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Disable DHCP and set up SSID and security settings on the N600.

Okay, in the first screenshot, check the box that says configure manually...

Then put these numbers in:

Router Address : 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
First DHCP : 192.168.1.10
Last DHCP : 192.168.1.200

Factory reset your N600... (Push the little pin at the back probably?)
Plug your computer directly into the N600 (nothing else plugged in to the N600)
Got to 192.168.1.1? (The router homepage)
Go to LAN IP settings (or something like that?)
Change the LAN IP to 192.168.1.2
Click apply, you will need to release then renew your IP now)
Then go back to the same page by navigating to 192.168.1.2 and go to LAN IP again
Now Disable DHCP on the N600.

You will now not get an IP address from the N600, plug a cat5 cable between the LAN of the BT box and into the LAN of the N600.

You should now be able to plug your computer into either one of the routers LAN ports and be able to browse to both 192.168.1.1 (BT Hub) and 192.168.1.2 (N600)

You can now set up SSID and Passwords etc.

What you put for router address will become the address of the BT router. I find it easier to use .1 .2 etc for my wireless access points. For example, I have my router at .1, then all my access points on .2 .3 and .4 :)

It's really up to you as to what you want static IP's to be, just make sure they're out of the DHCP range.

As above, really; but I like to use 200+ for routers / VLAN interfaces.

BT Hub
IP 192.168.1.254
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Keep DHCP on
Connect cat 5 to access point via one of the LAN ports

Netgear
Set 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DNS 192.168.1.254 (aka router IP)
Turn DHCP off
