Hi All

I have the wonderful task of fault finding Granny's broadband connection. Currently the ADSL light is on, yet the router can't serve web pages. I've tried another computer, so I don't think it's a computer software issue. So, can you hit me with possible reasons why web pages can't be served even though the ADSL light is on. (Oh, and obviously I will be speaking with their tech support but it's better if you give me some reasons so it sounds like I know what I'm talking about ...)

Thanks

It's with Metronet.co.uk (since taken over by Plus.net). The router is a two to three year old Netgear DG834GT. The modem status is showing as connected, and that's why I'm a bit stumped as to what's going on. They did up the line speed (now showing connected at 7,008kbps) and I'm wondering if for some reason the router can't cope with the new speed (even though it's showing as connected).

Thanks, I will try another microfilter and router.

"Other things to check is that the computer is getting assigned an IP address and DNS server." How do I check this?

Thanks :p

The settings page from the router is below. One question, on this screen the Network Type is shown as PPPoE, yet on another screen I have an Encapsulation dropdown which is set as PPPoA (PPP over ATM). Is this consistent? (I think it's ok but want to check). I have been advised by the ISP Metronet.co.uk that the connection should be PPPoA.

As you can see the router settings screen is showing Status as Connected.

My own view is that somewhere the account is failing an authentication thereby preventing surfing. Is there anything in the router screens that could show this? I will post other router screens shortly.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, there is a clickable Router Status link in the Maintenance menu of the first screen print, but the router is at another house and I can't currently check. I have the feeling it didn't show anything otherwise I would have taken a screen print when I was last there trying to fault find.

Thanks
