Hi All,

after the recent firmware upgrade on the O2 wireless box II i am getting dropouts while playing flashpoint dragon rising on PC, its driving me insane now.. the PS3 is having the same problem aswell.

I am looking to buy a modem / router that will try and keep my connection up and be nice n steady, I have read good and bad reviews on various ones but would like to know what you guys are using, i'm willing to look at anything that will keep my connection steady and not drop out..

I have the following in mind - D-Link DSL-2740R which is a modem router anyone got one of these or would recommend it?

Any help would be great....

Stu

Depends what you mean by gamer really, if you're sharing you connection a qos router will work wonders etc. Cable routers will need a modem attached, but they give you more choice, particularly in firmware. The O2/be box (TG585v7 ) can be bridged and is surprisingly stable, however it's a real pain to do.

If you can live without n/gigabit then any tomato based router will work, it's qos can't be beat, it can handle more connections than you'll need (8192 in my case, but the "view servers" list in steam doesn't pass 5500) but more importantly can be configured to do whatever you need it to. The catch is the older hardware, although this does make it cheaper :). The wrt54gl is the most commonly used, the asus wl500g premium is the most powerful and has usb ports but it's difficult to find/more expensive.

Commercial firmware i.e. official doesn't usually give you a huge number of options and typically has poor qos or poor time-out settings which causes problems with lag/high numbers of connections e.g. steam.

Hi There,

Thanks for the reply, i could do with a good QOS modem router as the wireless II box is pants.. is the Asus WL500G a modem router or just a router? I could really do with a good strong wireless too for the PS3 althoguh its just a G connection i think i need for that..

Gaming wise i run a PS3 and PC and Wii, the PC is wired and the rest are wireless.

My main problems are that:

1. PS3 connections drop out regularly whilst in game or just on chat (wireless)
2. PC Games (Flashpoint Dragon Rising / Cod 5 ) when in coop mode connection drops out losing the game)

As you will know yourself there is nothing worse than playing a game then losing connection, I was onto O2 tech support about it and they confirmed it was the firmware, the guy was a gamer himself and recommended i get another modem router..

Will the asus premium router be enough to buy or will i need to get another modem to bridge with it...?

If it's just afew consoles the wrt54gl will suffice but you'll need a separate modem. You can always just bridge the o2box and use that rather than buying one, but I'm not familiar with o2s firmware. I'd check their forums before doing that, it may turn out to be more difficult than it sounds.

I use a DG834GT on an O2 connection and i've never had a single issue with it with 18 months on the O2 max product.

As it is an older router you would lose things like wireless N level connections. I use the last DGteam firmware on a sky branded DG834GT box (which can be picked up cheaply on ebay) and I currently have an uptime of 6 and a half months and the last outage was caused by a power cut.
