Hi could do with a bit of advice as haven't used a router before. Currently have only my gaming PC connected but am looking to connect a rig i'm building for my son for his birthday and the wii and maybe even a laptop i use for work. I'm wondering the best way to do this and whether cabled or wireless (or combination of both) is the way forward.

We have a large living room (two rooms knocked into one). At the front is our TV with the Wii, at the back my desk with gaming PC. My sons will be upstairs (the room above my PC).

We are currently on Virgin 10M connection. Any suggestions about the best way to go. Is there a problems with gaming or downloading over a wireless connection. My lad will be probably be using more for internet access but will be doing some gaming, will the fact he is on the floor above remove the option of wireless and can the Wii be hooked up wireless.

Also anyone any suggestions for keeping my lad away from dodgy sites, he's nearly nine.

Cheers in advance for any help

Presumably the modem is near to the existing PC?

Get a wireless router. Wireless-G should be sufficient for a 10Mb connection, make sure it's a cable router not ADSL.

Connect the existing PC using a network cable.
Connect the Wii using wireless (built-in).
Connect the laptop using wireless.
Connect the upstairs PC by wireless, it'll obviously need a wireless card or USB dongle. If the signal isn't strong enough look at a HomePlug connection.

Look at OpenDNS to allow you to control what's accessible via the Internet.
