I can't for the life of me pick out a new router. Ones I'm considering:

RT-N56U
RT-N66U
RT-AC66U
WNDR4500
WNDR4000
WNDR3800

Just a standard 4x GigE + wireless for the house.

My initial pick is the RT-N56U but I have been reading complaints about it. In fact I have been reading complaints about all of them, that's why i can't decide :(

The main things I want is fast & rock solid reliable. I don't care too much about wireless performance or special features. I'd rather not spend more than I have to.

sounds like the main issue people complain about of WAN drops might have been fixed?

Dear Valued Customers,

The Error "You have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N56U" is an error that occurs on the internet or WAN side of the router. Customers that have this issue usually use a cable Internet Server provider. So we can better help and understand this issue, please contact us at [email protected] with details on your network setup for assistance.

Additionally, there will be a major software/firmware update in the near future that may assist with your issue. Please check our support site for future updates: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=11&m=RT-N56U&hashedid=ik8J7ZTvg1uktpab

I think I'll just get the N56U

RT-N66U is the only one that supports tomato, which seems to be a must as official asus firmware has a couple small bugs in it currently. It's easily the most powerful, and although you don't want to spend to much, it out-classes everything so it makes sense if you plan on keeping it 5+ years (routers don't get replaced much).

The RT-N56U is cheaper, but only has 1 custom firmware.

Cheapest option is a RT-N16. Same ram & cpu as the N56U, 4x the flash ram but only single band 300Mb wifi - which you state as being a non issue. Flash the raf mod and you have a rock solid router, or shibby if you need more features.

wndr4500 for less than £115 is brilliant. i've been using it for bt infinity and is a great price for a top of the range router.

Rivals are obviously the Asus N66U and Linksys E4200v2/E4500.

RT-N16 is easily found for less than £60. In fact even if wireless was a concern (which it isn't) you could easily add a second to alleviate that issue, doubling the cpu and options at you disposal for the same price.
