Router and online gaming

My and a friend bought a steam called MX vs ATV reflex. It has online play available.

We opened the steam ports and the ports for the game itself. We have checked the ports are open. When either of us invited the other for an online game we would get an error message that said "This session is no longer available".

We are both with BE ISP and both of us are using the supplied Thomson TG585v7 router with the latest firmware. We both have uPnP enabled.

After searching around for a solution somebody suggested it may be because we are using the same router. I think it has something to do with the LAN address? Somebody suggested doing something like this

I don't know how to do that on our routers anybody know how to do that?

As a test I borrowed a Netgear DG834 and opened the relevant ports. We were then able to play each other online. I can invite my friend for a game and he can invite me.

We then tried again with both of us using the Thomson router. The "This session is no longer available" error message came back.

So in short if we both use the Thomson router we cannot play each other online. If we have me using the Netgear router and my friend using the Thomson router we can play each other online.

Ideas for how to resolve this will be most welcome.

To be honest, I think youve already found the best solution. I'm with Be and had no end of gaming problems with friends when I used the speedtouch. As soon as I replaced it, we had no problems.

Thanks.

Do you know if the new routers BE do have the same problem?

Although my friend and I can now play each other online in a private session he cannot join a public game and I can. I am still on the netgear and he is still on the BE router. So as you say it must be the BE router.

We also have a weird problem with the game. On some race events I seem to get a much beter bike than my friend in terms of speed and accelleration.

When we create a private online session if we play supercross or champion sport track we can play on equal terms. You can see no player has an advantage over the other in terms of speed or acceleration.

If we choose free ride, nationals, omnicross or waypoint play we cannot play on equal terms. My bike always has much better speed and acceleration. We have double checked we are both choosing the same bike. Naturally this makes these races unplayable.

It's a great game as well. A steal at £3 on Amazon USA.

I have raised a ticket with BE to see if the latest router they do fixes the issue. The latest router is the Technicolor 582n. I don't see why I should have to buy another router to play games online.

Thanks. I did look at that but the latest firmware is supposed to resolve the NAT issue. Also correct me if I am wrong but that seems to relate to xbox and PS3 users. I am playing a steam game.

Although it refers to consoles the same steps are applicable to the PC.
