ello!

long time since ive been on the forums never mind made a post, used to be on constant but now im just too busy, :(

anyway lately ive been messing with wds, and rpk running in vmware along with a couple of other virtual machines that run on an old dell ultra small 745 that is used as a file server and xbmc box

the internet feed come in via a master socket in my room into a crappy bethere thompson router which ive become so fed up with as although the internet works well bar line drops now and again (live about 3km from the exchange in a rural area) its painfully slow and just to access its web interface takes literally minutes at times

this is fed to the dell 745 via a gigabit 8 port switch and from that an ethernet cable run through the roof space and to a socket in the living room , then into an old linksys wrt54g running tomato

the vm on the dell that provides wds also does dns and dhcp duties

what i now want to do is try pfsense in another vm machine on the dell if possible however what i need to know is does the router need to be put into bridged mode ?

if so this would be a pain as there is only one ethernet cable run across the roof space and getting another down through the wall is impractical

multiple nics are also recommended using pfsense which in the 745 isnt an option as it has no expansion bays at all and id like to avoid usb based ones

is it possible to feed the internet via a router in my room passing through the netgear 8 port switch into the wrt54g (this will be replaced with something gigabit at some point) into the dell

and somehow pfsense taking over routing
will i need to let pfsense take care of dns and dhcp? as this will effect my wds setup or can i get away by changing the gateway ip in dhcp on the vm machine to set clients to use the pfsense as the gateway and pfsense set to use the router ?
