Hi,

Im after a router, but first off would I need one for just one PC connected to the internet? or is it more viable to have one with more than one PC?

Ok, if so which would be the best one to have from OCuK?

Thanks.

the only benefit you will see by using one with just one computer is the hardware firewall afaik, i use mine for my main gaming rig, my general rig and my lads xbox :)

If you have 1, or 10 PC's, I still go for a router.

As far as recommendations go though, it totally depends on if you have ADSL or a cable modem. Also, do you want wireless?

ADSL Modem, no wireless.

Netgear DG834 if budget is an issue or Cisco 877 if it isn't.

Thanks, wheres the Cisco one?

Also, is there anything additional to this I will need? i.e. cables?

edit: Actually says 'Not suitable for use with USB modems.'

Which I have.

Ah, just saw that you asked for routers that OcUK sell. They don't sell Cisco stuff, but you'd be looking at around £300 for an 877 anyway.

The DG834 will come with all the cables you need unless you're going to plug more than one PC into it, in which case you'd need an extra network patch cable (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Network_Cables_150.html) per PC.

Edit: Forget about the USB modem - throw it in the bin. The DG834 has a built in ADSL modem.

Oh right sweet, thanks a lot.

Probably order a DG834 then.

So, what about a brief setup?

Is it easy :/

Yeah, setup is a doddle. Cable up the router (cable with small plugs goes between the ADSL port on the router and the filter) and connect a network cable (there is one in the box) between one of the LAN ports on the router and the network card on your PC.

Wait a minute whilst your PC gets an IP address from the router. Open your web browser and tap in the address of the router (it'll say in the quick start guide, but probably http://192.168.0.1) login using username - admin, password - password.

The router will ask you if you want to run through a setup wizard, press yes and give it the information it wants (ADSL username and password).

Check that Internet Explorer isn't set to dial a default connection or it'll try to use the USB instead of the router to get onto the internet. Go to the tools menu, internet options then connections. Check that 'never dial a default connection' is ticked.

Unplug the USB modem and throw into the nearest bin.

Ok, does it look abit like this, the physical setup?
