Hello my router literally started smoking today .

Right I need a new one and after much searching have settled on this one;

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-049-AS&groupid=46&catid=1596

Now I know it doesn't have 802.11ac however I'm not convinced I even need it.

Is it worth the extra and getting an ac ready one?

Any recommendations?

(I have a virgin cable modem if that makes any difference.)

Thank you.

ask virgin for new router for free! no way i would spend over £100 for a router when an ISP could supply me a free router that could do same job!

Experience of a couple of friends "superhubs" and after reading up on it a new one seems the way forward.

Need a wider coverage as I cant get connection in my garden despite moving the current router all over the house.

Virgin also wanted £45 so figured I could do much better.

I've got one of these and it's great. I use the upgraded Merlin's firmware, and I've been very happy with it. If wireless is important to you, it will be far better than a Superhub.

There is a draft AC version of this router, but is only important if you think you're going to use it AC. When I bought my N66U, it was less than half the price of the AC version, and I have no AC clients, so I decided to save the cash.

Brilliant thank you :) Good to hear from someone who has one.

Is there a huge difference between the merlins firmware and stock?

Nope no AC clients myself either.

Merlin's firmware looks and feels like the standard firmware, but it's got extra features and bug fixes. Some of his work has actually been ported into Asus' official firmware. With Merlin's firmware, you get to keep using the various closed sourced parts of the official firmware.

I just assume that by the time I'll need AC clients, it will be a few years down the line, and a replacement AC router will be much cheaper. Until then, N routers are more than fast enough for me.

i've also got one of these with virgin media's superhub 1 in modem mode. Although i use tomato firmware as it has much, much better Quality of Service if that kind of thing is important to you.

I think the QoS got ported from Tomato into Merlin last year, but I might be mis-remembering. There's no doubt Tomato and DD-WRT have more features, but you lose out on things like the hardware acceleration module, which is closed source and only available for the original Asus and Merlin firmwares.

Personally I always resume it very simply:

I offer performance. DD-WRT offers features. Tomato offers a mix of both.

Nothing to stop someone trying all three and seeing what you like/use.

It was a tenda router well out of warranty so I imagine not worth the hassle.

Look forward to my new router :)

Thanks for all comments.
