Router box

Im thinking of having a play around with a linux distro for the main purpose of routing & port throttling, iv used some linux distros but only rarely, for instance Ubuntu.

Iv heard that it is possible to create good bandwidth managment using some sort of script/application in linux and i want to learn how to do it

You can get a distribution specifically designed for this that runs on a floppy. Do a Google for Linux Router on a Floppy

Or use Gentoo.

You can try http://m0n0.ch/wall/ (Monowall) that's based on FreeBSD and designed for router/firewall boxes. There are a lot of Mini-ITX based systems designed for this purpose available as well.

ClarkConnect is a powerful one based on CentOS which I find great. I have certainly found it better than m0n0wall (albeit a lot larger). m0n0wall is fine though. pfSense is a good one based on m0n0wall.

I use m0n0wall on quite a high end setup.. and it's extremely good.

I use it on a WRAP motherboard, and it's easily as stable as a Cisco ASA/Pix unit (although, throughput is a lot less)
