Router for hosting at home, provider is PlusNet Fiber

I’m totally out of the picture when it comes to routers and need some advice.

I work from home and sometimes connecting to VPN’s for work. I also need to host websites using Windows 2008 server, again from same home connection.

These are basic requirements.

1) Need a router that I can change the host IP address, this is so it does not conflict with remote routers when connecting over VPN.

2) Need something that’s pretty secure, so ideally good firewall.

3) Would like QOS. This is so the hosted server always has a minimum bandwidth available, and vice versa if I’m using other computers (say VOIP / Skype) and my hosting server experiences high bandwidth.

4) Wifi not that important, mainly running cable.

Currently I’m with Plusnet fiber on static IP and using the standard Technicolor router they provide.

Before I purchase any hardware, I do have the following available, a Drayteck Vigor 2800vg. It’s an old router from 2007, I’m not sure if it will connect to the BT Openreach box, however could it be used with another router to provide QOS or better security?

Appreciate any help

I can't see anything very remarkable in that list of requirements.

For the most part the provided Technicolor would handle it. For something more capable an Asus RT-N66U should do everything you need (possibly with alternative firmware).

The Vigor 2800VG isn't going to help you in this situation. It doesn't have a suitable WAN port, and would probably be too slow anyway.

IP security cameras

Bremen, thanks for your advice that Asus looks pretty good.

Another thing. I'm going to have IP security cameras in my house, do any routers exist that allow IP streaming, or at least have features that help support IP cameras.

Still not purchased a router yet but almost certainly going for Asus RT-N66U.

This may sound like a odd question, but can the Wifi be disabled on this router? I looked at the manual and watched YouTube videos on it's interface but never noticed an option to disable it's Wifi.

Yes.
