Router for VPN

Hi Guys,
Can i setup my Airport Extreme for VPN or does it need to be the actual Internet Router that handles VPN? Is it safe doing it this way?

The Airport doesn't do VPN, but will do VPN passthrough (as far as I know, I'm not into Apple products).
I'm going to assume you want a remote access VPN, to allow you access to your network while you're out and about.
You can use a dedicated router or use a PC/server to create the VPN. More info on your hardware/software would help.

Does it need to be a VPN? You could remotely connect to a machine in the office using Logmein or one of the other remote control applications out there.

I have Lion Server setup on my Mac mini. Is this the way it will work

Internet ---> Router ---> Airport Extreme ---> Lion Server

Sorry guys VPN is new to me, if you have any recommendations on a walkthrough guide to setting it up then please let me know.

I want it to be VPN as I will be setting up iCal, Mail and other services that I want to access from my iPhone and iPad.

I also want to setup a VPN connection between my Home network and my work network over the next few weeks. So I'm using this for practice as well.
