router help please

im am running vista 32 bit and have the asus p5b deluxe motherboard with wireless ap on board ? this is a new pc and my old 56k modem will not run with vista so i am going to get broadband and have been advised to get a router rather than a modem but dont have the first clue on what i need any advice would be appricated

first off read the sticky (top of the page) carefully.
then search for a BB provider that balances cost against performance and customer service then come back with any questions.
its not all that complicated but u need to get your head around what you want not what someone wants to sell you.

Hi

The broadband you are planning on getting will it be ADSL or cable ? as they equipment you need will differ a little bit.

it adsl and am going to go with fast for my provider they had advised a router because i am on a long cable and tried to get broadband a couple of year ago but as soon it connected it would drop the signal so they have advised a router because it give more information than a modem to help solve the problem

Based on the fact that you previously had ADSL and it would not work due to either distance or line quality I would recommend that you get a cheap and cheerful router as you could find that you still have the same problem and that your line will not support ADSL if that does turn out to be the case then you do not really want to spend a lot on the router.

Have you run your phone number through any checkers to get an indication on what sort of speed is expected on your line ?
