Hi there, I have a Linksys WRT54GS which has a 10mb connection going through it via a virgin media modem. I am connected to the router via ethernet cable whilst my sister and dad connects wirelessly.

Now and again the router randomly drops the internet connection for all users and subsequently I have to restart the router (leaving the modem on) for my internet to work again.

It happens at wierd times, for instance if im playing an online game then it will stay connected the whole time with no problems at all. Then at times when I dont use the internet for a minute, itll just drop out

It isnt my ISP as when I dont have the router in my connection is perfect.

Comments Appreciated

Thanks

Nah I dont, just downloading it now. Will this change any of my settings, eg the key to connect wirelessly to the router?

I wont have to set it all up again?

The "key to connect wirelessly to the router" isn't controlled by the firmware - you set it.
You might be able to back up the settings before you install the upgrade.

I managed to upgrade my firmware and keep my old settings by backing up the cfg.

However I am still getting the problem when it just randomly stops working and I have to reboot the router to get internet access again.

Mine does it, but only seems to drop the wireless connections. Think mines just a dud, and I've had it for ages. Theres a slim possibility yours could have a problem too.

I have a Netgear WGR614 (v6) on virgin media and it does this regularly, only needs 1 second to unplug the power cable to the router and back in again to reset it however it is very annoying.

Affects all wireless and wired connections.

Bought the router as a refurb from an online retailer, not sure if it's faulty but in a student house with 6 people we really can't spare the time to send it back.
