Ok so i have been using the DG834GT on O2 Home Broadband for awhile now and its been fine, but ever since MW2 came out, I have had serious issues when it comes to me hosting. My NAT is reported as OPEN in the game, so thats ok, but in-game everyone jitters about expect me. When i look at their pings, it seems fine (3bars for most and some on 4). This of course results in people leaving which is annoying as you can imagine.

Anyway, i have been opening all the ports required (multiple times, deleting them and trying again), but still no luck. I also tried "Pingtest" and it fails the Packet Loss test, resulting in an overall grade of "B". The ping is normal for me, around 36ms. I thought this was odd, and even after opening the ports for Pingtest, it still fails.

Tonight i decided to plug the old O2 Wireless Box II back in and try it to see if it worked and it did pass the Packet Loss test with 0% and the same ping of around 36-37ms. Now i haven't been able to try hosting MW2 since its really a luck of the draw in public games and also i don't have anyone to test it with online at the minute.

So i was just wondering what the problem could be? The Netgear is fine and gives me pretty much the same speeds as the O2 Box, a tad faster maybe. I would prefer to use the Netgear, but its really annoying doing some matches and then when it comes to me everything goes wrong!

If there are any logs or anything that i should check and post then i'd be glad to as im not really sure where to begin!

Cheers

i think this is more related to your upstream capacity, what upload do you have?

the reason why everyone jitters around but you is because you are local (the host) and everyone else is remote, therefore subject to limitations of your net connection.

Upload is just over 512Kbps which comes out at around 77kb/s actual speed (sorry if it's the wrong bits or bytes, hopefully you know what I mean!). By no means a lot, but I'd of thought enough since it picks me to host.

My download is just over 5Mb/s advertised speed if that makes a difference. It's just weird cause all the players have at least 3 green bars.

It also depends who you are hosting to, When i host on my 20meg virgin there is sometimes around 4 on full connection but sometimes all 12 are on full. If you are hosting to a party of Americans then they will obviously have a worse connection than someone in the UK.

i cant find anything after a quick search on google, a little more diging may get the answer

anyways, id say this was the limitation of your upstream, have you tried hosting less people and seeing the results from that (if its possible?)

Could be the upload speed, but I thought the game would detect it was slow and not choose me to be host. It happens everytime I host, so I don't think it is just when the teams are full of Americans etc.

be worth checking that nothing is hogging your upstream bandwidth, like p2p etc

im sure they will have stuff to work out the best host when everyone in the lobby

yea I've tried it with all the computers in the house off and it still had the problem. Tis very weird!

Can you post your modem stats and a speedtest result?

My friend manages to get about 3 on Full (including him) on a 0.37 upstream on BT!

Sorry for the late reply. Didn't notice someone else posted!

Here are the stats:

Uptime: 0 days, 8:34:52
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 28.0 / 54.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 1.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 416 / 1,079,711

And Speedtest result:

There are a lot of erros i notice in the stats. No idea what they mean though! My router tends to resync each night at one point though, has done for as long as i can remember.

Just looking again, saw the SN Margin is 1.0 Down? Seems way too low, thought it was usually around 6db, it was last night anyway!

EDIT: Just cut off and resynced now:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:00:44
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 763 / 4,371
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 28.0 / 53.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 4 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 24 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 73
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 928 / 1

SN Margin up again, but sync rate down to 4.3mbps. Guess O2 see that the SN Margin is too low and resync to stabilise the line? Even though it is stable away.
