My Speedtouch 585 (v5) has today been playing up.

It started by the connection disconnecting with a message - 'Idle Timeout Reached' or similar.
I tried to reconnect but the router appeared to lock up. It was accessible by telnet, but not via the HTTP interface.

I tried to do a system reboot via telnet, and this didn't do anything on the router. So after leaving it for ~5 mins or so with no joy, I decided I would have to power the router down via the power switch at the back.

10 mins later I came back to power it on again, all the lights came on as normal but the router was not accessible by any of the connected devices (2 wired PC's, and 1 wireless PC). Neither the telnet interface or the HTTP one was responding, and it wasn't pingable. Further more, when I checked the PC's IP address, it was not being assigned one on the routers own range, so I am assuming the DHCP isn't working on the router.

I tried manually configuring one of the PC's onto it's IP range and trying to get to it that way, but it was unsuccessful. Eventually I gave up and plugged it out for an hour or so, then when I powered it up again (and still wouldn't work) I tried the hard reset switch at the back, and at first it did nothing, then I tried it again (holding down for several seconds both times) and it eventually appeared to do a hard reset.

Most of my settings had been cleared, but some (password & WEP key) were still there. But it was working.

Now fast forward a couple of hours, and I notice MSN has signed out, and the internet has stopped responding - so I access the router and again it shows as disconnected and when I clicked connect it stopped responding, and I'm back where I started :o.

I've tried numerous times to do a hard reset, to no avail and I don't appear to be getting anywhere.

Has anyone else had similar problems like this, or any idea if the router is salvageable or should I just bin it?

Thanks

have you tried a firmware update?

Are you following the instructions for hard reset by that i mean restore to factory defaults? I know it seems silly 'push the button that says reset' but some need a sequence to do it in properly. If a hard reset isnt working to restore defaults then something is fundermentally wrong with you router, however because it is still letting you accsess the config pages i would put money on it being a firmware problem that will probably be ok if the defaults can be restored.

But as you mentioned that only some settings were wiped it seems to suggest that something electronicly has died

The speedtouch FAQ says to hold the reset button until the power light goes red or about 7 seconds, which it doesn't anymore it stays lit green.

At the moment, as before I am unable to access the router pages at all, ping it, or access it via telnet (I also presume ftp too, but haven't tried it). So I don't really have anyway to update the firmware (which is upto date anyway).
