Made a thread on this a while ago, but now Ive now got all my facts straight. The mobo is an Asus A8N-E. When I plug my router (Netgear DG834G v2) into the mobo, it is not recognised, and no new network connections appear in Network Connections (Win XP) . It is enabled in my BIOS.
Does anyone know what this can be? Is it more likely to be a hardware or woftware problem?
The light emitted out of the back when I plug it into the mobo is amber. Does this have any significance?

Im having to use a Netgear WG111v2 to connect to the router.

I unplugged it and tried ipconfig and it just came up with "windows IP configuration" and that was all.

Windows Firewall is enabled with uPnP enabled, and uPnP is also enabled in the router settings.

The network cable is fine as its worked on my previous desktop.

DOes the ethernet adaptor show up under device manager ok? what about under start > settings > network connections? Any difference when it is unplugged? I would expect to see something like:-
Ethernet adapter LAN:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

No it doesnt show up at all. Its built into the mobo but theres nothing in device manager.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I just gave up in the end as it was xmas, I went on holiday, been really busy, etc...usual excuses!
Ive got a new router (another netgear router, but a sky broadband version) and my pc still isnt recognising that the network cable is plugged in. Therefore I can rule out that its not the router, but the pc at fault. I am connecting via a USB dongle (as stated above) to the router.
As before, there is nothing showing in device manager.

To be honest they werent like that not so long ago, but its not my computer anymore, I gave it to my family to use. Im hoping that they will all clear once I install the chipset drivers.
