Something has gone wrong with my router. It was working fine yesterday but now I cannot get anything off the net through it. My network connections say they are fine. Itll repair no problem but none of my programs, outlook, IE etc will not connect even though the system says it's fine. If I plug the modem cable direct into the back of the computer, it works fine (I'm typing this) All the numbers n IP adress stuff is the same as it's ever been so I don't know whats different all of a sudden? I'm not using wireless, the cable just goes via the router into my main case. Help!

When you login to the router, does the status say connected or disconnected?
Sorry to ask, but have you tried turning it off and back on again......

Can you ping the routers internal address? (192.168.x.x)

If so the internal networking is fine so is probably a DSL connectivity problem - reset the router and give it 5 mins to reconnect then try pinging 4.2.2.2 and see if that works.

Make sure the router's getting an IP from the modem - if it works fine directly connected to your PC, you'll probably have to switch it off and mess about to get it to work with the router again.

It isn't DSL.

Last time weird stuff happened to my parents simailar router various cables had been sucked up the vacuum, the router had a fit and lost some but not all settings including those for the ISP's DNS servers. Any such mishap been perpetrated here?

On another occasion the isp had service problems and changed its DNS servers IP addresses and the modem/router it was very slow to update them

You can try pinging all sorts of ip addresses but its probably worth looking at the status screens and doing a factory reset before re-entering all settings. Check the cable and socket for damage, swap round if you can.
