I was just wondering do you turn a router off or not bother when your are not using, like at night for example. I have just set up a wireless network from my bedroom and the router seems to be quite hot.

This is probly a stupid question but I have never had a router before, I have only had modems that turn on and off with the computer. If I turn the router off does it remember its settings when turned back on.

I searched on google but there wasnt really a definative answer.

isnt the idea of having a router so that you can leave it on all the time having instant access to the internet without the need to dial in every time as well as allowing the other pcs on the lan (if you have one) to access the net with out the need for a server or gateway pc

All the settings are stored in solid state memory within the router, so you could theoretically turn it off when not in use. There's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving it on 24/7, however, and I expect that's what 99.99% of owners do.

My router is on 24/7 and has been for a good six months or so; only gets rebooted for firmware updates and such. It gets warm, but hasn't burst into a ball of flames yet :)

Well, I turned mine off last night while I was asleep and when I woke up this morning there was problems, it either seems to have hard reset itself or it doesnt hold the settings when there is no power.

I tried everything to get it back up but it wasnt having any of it so I had to uninstall and reinstall, needless to say I wont be turning it off again :)

What router is it? Is it a D-Link by any chance? The D-Link routers I've seen need to have the settings manually applied after being changed otherwise they forget things when power cycled.
