Router or Ethernet switch?

Sorry if this is a daft question!

My sister has bought another PC I would like to set up a home Network, the PC’s are located next to each other so weird is no problem, she also has a modded XBOX she’d like to connect to the network (stream DIVX etc) my question is does she need a router or would a Ethernet switch do? I have virtually the same set and use the ‘Netgear RP614 Router – Retail’ we both have Virgin NTL (formally cable NTL). She currently has one PC connected directly to the cable modem via USB (which I know isn’t as good as Ethernet), but Ethernet is on the modem. (Windows XP)

A router is the sensible option simply because it'll let you access the internet from either PC without having to get involved in using ICS to share the connection from one to the other. Most will have an 4 port ethernet switch built in so there will be plenty of ports for all the required devices.

Just make sure you get one designed for cable and not ADSL
