Noob question potentially, brace yourself!

I got a router with my TalkTalk broadband connection. It seems a bit generic and the options in the settings are very limited. Speed is acceptable, I guess..though I don't really have anything to compare to.

I see you can buy better quality and higher spec routers on the market. Are these likely to give any speed bonus or is it entirely dependant on the line?

I'm currently connecting to the router over WiFi, but it's like 6 foot away from my computer only, so I don't know if that's losing performance or not.

Fill me in!

At that distance why aren't you using an network cable? They aren't expensive.

Room setup really. Opposite ends of room, to use a wire means going in an arc round the room to the computer.

As for performance, I'm not really unhappy with what I have. It's just broadband for the moment but I want to upgrade to Fibre as soon as I can. Just wondered if I could get better performance by upgrading the router, or if that's just horseplay.
