Router Problem

Ive just set up the router a Netgear Wgt624v2 108mbs wireless one . but i cant get the internet to work via either wireless or ethanet , only if the laptop is connected directly into my surfboard modem. I have noticed that in the router settings it has no ip or anything all just 0.00.000.00 so i try to release and renew but it just stays the same

is there any ideas on how i can get internet to work

Switch modem off, switch router off, connect both, switch modem on, wait for lights to settle, switch router on.

BUT my download speed is now half

direct to modem it downloads at 1.15mb /sec and with router it downloads at 500-600kb sec

how come

Perhaps because Netgear kit is nasty junk that can't route at decent speeds?

Obvious thing to look for would be CPU usage, but suspect the router doesn't give it. Making sure the WAN port is 100Mbps might be a good idea too.
