router question

hi i am using a netgeardg834gt modem.ithink it is stopping me in internet related programs.i can excess the settings using the sky internet.my question is can i turn the firewall of on it all together and do i need a firewall on a router.i cant find any settings to turn it off.and i seem to have 2 ip adresses an internal1 and a external1.not sure what thats all about.any ideas..
