I have recently just moved house and the broadband switched over today but the speed I’m getting is nowhere near what I expected. My neighbour with sky is getting 30-40meg and plusnet said I should be getting 30-40 but I have never got more then 16 today.

The router stats are below

Anyone know from those stats if I should be getting more from my line or is that it

We really need more information, Number of sockets in the house, Master socket location, are you using the master socket, any other sockets in use etc.

The Attentuation is right for your speed but there may be other issues. Can you take a photo of the socket your Router is connected to, and the Master socket if that's not the socket in use?

I have an 80mb connection installed a few months ago from sky and I only got 40mb.

turns out the cable from outside to my master socket was loose and the master socket was dodgy. Sky sent someone out and changed the master socket and now I get 79mb.

you have to try just the router plugged in to the line and make sure your on a fibre package like 40mb or 80mb.

I have two sockets the one downstairs is this one, which I have the router plugged into.

I also have this one in a bedroom but it’s not used.

Take the bottom section off on the socket in the first picture and connect to the test socket at the bottom right. Once it's synced check the speed again. It may also be worth changing the microfilter if you have a spare.

I’ve plugged into the test socket and now the router says

I’ve spoken to plusnet earlier and the first speed I was getting they said was below guaranteed so they booked engineer out for tomorrow

Bit weird that your master socket says Virgin Media on it.

I would expect Openreach to fit a new filtered master socket directly to your incoming line, and leave the extensions disconnected.

Haha i never even noticed that, looking inside the box the wires look very brittle and old, I am having a nightmare with the wifi as well with the concrete floors upstairs. I have ordered a TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT 2-Port Powerline Adapter WiFi Starter Kit, hopefully that will sort out the upstairs signal.

You don’t appear to be using the ISP router. Odds are you’re going to asking them for support in the near future and that may confuse things.

Find where the line comes into the house. Then find the first socket connected to it and remove any additional extension wiring. If it’s still slow log a fault.

BTW is there any noise on the line? Use the quiet line test number and make sure there isn’t. If there is report it as a line fault (voice).

Hi, The router plusnet supplied broke so i rushed out and bought this TP-Link one and its been solid at my old house for about 2 years now. I will do the quiet line test now see what i get. The guy from plusnet i spoke to today said his tests show no faults on the line but it was less then the guaranteed.

Though technically not legal (the master socket belongs to the provider) it’s not unheard of for OR or VM at the insistence of a customer to re-wire an existing master socket. It really shouldn’t happen, but lazy techs and insistent customers are unfortunately pretty common. It becomes an issue when a supplier is expecting a pre-cabled property and an office only install and it doesn’t work because the pairs have been pulled.

Update

the openreach engineer asked if I wanted the extension disconnected from upstairs because he said I was losing bandwidth with that. He installed new front plate and he said the virgin box was probably because of a contractor only having those when he’s installed the line, Virgin is nowhere near my postcode ne22. I am now getting around 27meg down, he said the line is only capable of around 30 with the distance from the cabinet and exchange.
