router wifi connectivity issues

Have a BT homehub 2 set up and running 1 x lappy and 2 x smartphones on wifi through it.

Every so often the devices cannot connect. This is resolved with a reset of the router, but what is causing this? And anything i can do to stop this occurring?

Devices are: xperia z, lg g2 and a hp laptop.

The HH2 was never very good, and they don't improve with age.

I'd suggest you start by having a good moan at BT, and see if they'll replace it with something more modern.

One thing you could try is to download inSSIDer and use it to check that you're using the least congested wireless channel.
