recommend me a new router/hub

i need it to have gigabit (i think its called that) , able to install linux onto it like tomato, able to attach a external Harddrive so i can download overnight.

and reliable

Well if you want Tomato you are probably best off with a WRT54GL and just adding a gigabit switch to it for connecting your devices to.

As for an external hard drive to download to you're going to just want a NAS for that. Either build your own out of an old PC and something like FreeNAS or go for an off the shelf thing such as one of the QNap boxes - the latter will more than likely be up your street with built in torrent clients and other such things.

AFAIK nobody makes a device that runs tomato and has the ability to attach external drives to.

Is there some reason in particular you need to use something like tomato? You could use something like a PC based router (pfSense / monowall / ClarkConnect) and just do all of the above in a PC with two NIC's and a gig switch.
