I'm looking to buy a wireless router, probbaly the WRT54GL as I'm on Ntl BB. I was wondering if the router would need to be connected to a PC or can you just have it connected to NTL's modem on its own ?. I dont have an ethernet connection on my PC, only USB :(

I'm thinking of getting a 360 soon aswell and since the BB connection is upstairs I'll be having my 360 downstairs, hence I need a wireless router.

You mean you want to connect the router and the PC to the modem?
Won't work. Everything has to connect to the router. A network card isn't that expensive though...

If its NTL sometimes it comes in through a cable line not a phone line, make sure your router can support this. Some routers do have a USB connection on but not many. I think u better splash out on £10 for a network card.

Im also goin on the assumption that your router has a built in modem, of course this is something i could quite easily check but its easier for me just to guess

Sorry I'm not up on routers. Can routers be used without them being physically connected to a PC ? I have a little NTL blue modem which has a white cable connected to it from the wall.

I want my PC downstairs., so if I got a linksys wireless adapter would i be able to connect to the net through the router upstairs ?

NTL wall box >>>>>> Modem >> Eathnet cable >> Router

Hope that makes sense

Yeah, routers can be used without connecting them physically to a computer. You would connect your NTL modem to the router which will in turn connect wirelessly to your PC downstairs.

NTL/TW modems have standard RJ45 and USB connections, RJ45 needs to go to the WAN port on the router, after that each of the PC's need's hooking up to the router. As the WRT54GL is wifi as well as a 4 port switch here's where it get's interesting ... You can either wire the clients direct with each PC having a NIC (preferable), or connect by wifi. I'll be honest if you do a lot of file transfers across the LAN wifi is not ideal, the WRT54GL only supports 54mbit under optimum conditions so while it's great for surfing it's not ideal for heavy file transfers and god forbid you have hundreds of small files to move!

So in short each client will need either a NIC or a wifi card of some description to be able to connect to the router and each other.
