Right, so my car has been fine up until now, pulling out of a junction and as i put it into second it kicked out. So clutch in, 2nd, kicks out again. Put it in second again and hold it and no its not staying.

Whats happened :S It sounds expensive to me :(

Thanks
Rob

I had this problem.

Mine wouldn't engage first, second or fifth. It turned out to be a cable blocking the gear mechanism from moving fully.

Get someone to stand over the opened bonnet and whilst you select different gears, see if they can see anything getting in the way.

Its a rover 414i, but every other gear works as normal. If, in first, i go up to about 10mph then go into second keeping a constant speed it stays in gear. But as soon as i touch the gogo pedal it pops out.

:(

Have you tryed to drive with your hand on the gear stick holding it in 2nd?

My older brother had to do that once, it wasnt a rover though

I had this in my rover coupe... well... sounds the same, the mechanic in the end told me that the syncromesh had gone? - which would involve stripping the gearbox apparently...

Im not intensely mechanically minded, so i opted for a new gear box @ £100 from the local scrappy... (was from a ZR, so nice n swish gears there after).

Also note. Throwing your money at any rover like that is a waste of time IMO, ive owned two and they were both horrid in every aspect!

Well ive got a 37k gearbox on its way to me, for £94 delivered. A friend is going to do the change for me, then i think ill take the old one to pieces and see what bust. I think it prob was the synchro mesh but nevermind.

Should be done soonish. Got quoted for labour from a garage at £180. But my friend will do it for £10ish an hour so taking it to him.

That's a good price. I got a 24k box for the old car for £100 from a Rover breakers.

But £180 labour  When I had mine changed, it was £70 labour... and that included new gearbox oil!

how easy a job is it to change? Ive got 2 fairly competant mechanics who are doing it for me (they do it in their spare time) so how long do you expect it should take?

Depends if they have a ramp or not.

The K series engine is only small, so there's plenty of room to get the box out. If they're doing it using axle stands and a trolley jack, about 3-4 hours max :)

I took mine to a proper garage with ramps and it took him two hours.

Theyve got axle stands and ramps, and by that i mean the small ones you chuck under the front two tyres and drive up :). Theyre clearing out the scout hut garage and will do it in there, so all well and good they should be able to do it in 2 evenings??
