Rover T Series cambelt tensioner - does it need replacing?

Most motor factorrs will stock a cambelt KIT - which includes a belt and tensioner.

I would not even contemplate doing the job without replacing said tensioner.

Wilky on rovertech does a lot of turbo rebuilts if you actually need one. Does the ti have any modifications?

If not bleed valve or proper boost controller and boost gauge is a good starting point :)

Indeed my 1.8T Cam Chain tensioner was £275 just for the part, Cambelt one is around $290 for the full kit, not that cheap really.

that makes mine look cheap

I look forward to the part when you look at the cam wear, looking through an independent porsche report on a 944 S2 i was going to buy the cost they quoted for replacing both cams due to wear made me want to fall over.

Guess if you do it yourself it won't be so bad but the cost of a few cams can't be cheap.

back then (in the 70s and 80s) there were some strange oils being recommended. the service books list sae 40 oils, loads of 70s specs i cant work out. sludgy engines werent uncommon, you wouldnt run a car hard on 15w40 castrol gtx mineral oil, but thats what was common back then.

10w40 semi is going on. this car has only done 41k miles so hopefully any undue wear will be limited

it may actually make its way up to your direct some day... ill take you out

Shocked at the oil situation, its a wonder so many of these engines have done mega miles, at only 41k you should be laughing. How much of a project are you finding this btw how much effort do you think its going to take to make it good again?

Give us a shout when you've got the car on the road again never been in a 928 so will be interesting to see what its like vs the 944's and 968 i should be driving in the next few weeks :)

the engine is a pretty basic engine. barely a single wire in the engine bay, just loads of hoses and pipes... theyre pretty complex tbh.

the anciliaries were a pig to strip away. each one had a different tensioning device but thats done now. cambelt etc is as simple at an 8ft cambelt can be lol

the 928 sites are useful. the posters seem to be a hands-on type so plenty of experience to draw on which ive found useful.

the main issue is the cost of parts. getting good quality parts doesnt seem to be too difficult but the cost is through the roof so you have to hunt around.

im gonna start making a thread now
