My son ordered agame online Thurs - 4/3/2010, received a e-mail saying it had been posted 1st class on friday - 5/3/2010 and should receive it with in 2 days. Game did not arrive on Saturday - 6/3/2010, so with there being no mail on a Sunday.

It will not arrive till Monday the 3rd day, so are the Royal Mail in breach of their contract with you? Should 1st class mail get priority for Saturday delivery or no 1st class mail excepted on a friday as they can not deliver on the 2nd day being Sunday.

From Their Website -
First Class mail is our cost-effective solution to delivery the next working day.
First Class mail - 1/2 Days
One of the most popular postal services, First Class mail aims to deliver your letter
or packet the next working day, including Saturday.

First class post is not a guaranteed service. You're not paying for a guarantee and you're not getting one. The only guarantee you have is 100x the cost of a first class stamp if the item never turns up.

If you really wanted guaranteed next day, you need to use RMSD.

PS - If you bought the item from any of several well-known sites based in Jersey or Guernsey, it'll take several (usually 3-5) days to arrive.

As has been said, Saturday is not a working day. I very rarely have anything first class take more than 2 working days to turn up

First Class isn't guaranteed, takes 1-2 days (sometimes longer) and Sunday isn't a working day, so they aren't breaching anything.

As a side note if you're talking about Final Fantasy XIII and a certain popular retailer on these forums the retailer has actually fibbed; the game wasn't despatched on Friday and will in fact be despatched today for delivery on Monday.

Saturday is a grey area for being classed as a "working day". For Royal Mail, it is, but other companies it may not be, though 9/10 times it is.

Or did you mistype and meant Sunday?

Nope I ment Saturday, I've always classed it as a none working day. I was unaware RM was different

Yeh, it's been more widely accepted as a working day through the last decade. For instance, back in the 90's, Tesco paid a Saturday premium and a Sunday premium to all staff working the weekend. Now the store is open Saturday like any other day with no premium for staff, only a Sunday premium paid. Give another 10 years, Sunday will start to go the same way I reckon. :(

Saying that, it's only government legislation that dictates maximum 6 open hours on Sunday that's stopping Tesco from being open all through the week... :(

I think with 1st class they deliver it when they feel like it. Im still waiting for a parcel thnat was posted on tuesday 1st class

I don't even think there's really such thing as 1st and 2nd class post. When I post ebay items 2nd class post, they usually seem to turn up within 1-2 days. They probably only keep the 2nd class option because all of the pensioners that seem to fill up the post office every day would start moaning "you're robbing from the poor"

I think that you would have been lucky to have got it today. For a packet with a game I would expect it to take at least 3 days. RM appear to have arbitrary delivery times.

You may not even get the package till Tuesday.

Posted by the supplier on Friday, but they may have missed the last collection.
Royal mail then starts processing the package on Saturday.
First working after is Monday, second working day will be Tuesday.

A con ? I think it's a amazing deal.

I often send items up to Scotland from my local village post office in the south west. Always they arrive around 8am the next day. It always impresses me and I appreciate the fast service. I think it's a bargain.

To add salt to the wound, recently I had a power supply posted to me on Friday afternoon via 2nd class

Turned up on Saturday
