Could it be the sudden proliferation of parcels that has caused their costs to increase? A van full of packages must cost a lot more to deliver than a bag of letters.

yeh it does, the bigger and heavier the parcel the more the delivery costs are. A lorry has limited space and load capicty. The heavier and/or bigger the letter, the more it costs to transport.

So you're trying to tell me it costs more to ship an empty 50L cylinder of helium and 500 inflated ballons than it does to ship a full 50L cylinder of helium and 500 uninflated balloons in a small box?
