Anyone in, or waiting to join, the Royal Navy?

Job market is well and truly dead in the UK and it was something I was thinking about doing years ago so I am probably going to go back to this. Really want to do the engineering side but without an engineering degree would need to join at tech level which isn't ideal but you have to learn! :p

So others who are waiting to join or those that are in mind sharing their experiences?

There's a massive British Armed Forces Discussion Thread somewhere, let me search for you :p

:edit2: Considered the other services?

I considered RAF but I am blind so not really ideal and also longer term with RN I was thinking about eventually moving across into Merchant Navy and even longer term rigs. I might stay with RN but it would depend on progression opportunities to be fair.

And no to the army, I don't mind being in a big ship getting shot at but not walking around on my tod getting shot at, I know how my luck normally rolls :p I have a lot of respect for the armed forces (I have 3 mates are Royal Marine Commandos) but that is not for me :)

Why does your eyesight have anything to do with joining the RAF? There are plenty of trades where eyesight doesn't matter any more than it would for entry in to the RN.

Good call on deciding against the army ;)

True, but my main thinking behind it is the fact that the engineering path through the royal navy is highly applicable to the merchant navy career (or even rigs) if I did then want to get out of the service.

To be honest I don't even know if you could jump between merchant and royal easily but I assume it would not be a massive leap :p

Go and have a chat with your local AFCO.......they will be able to give you more info on engineering...or post in the armed forces thread.......
