When you play an RPG game that features a character designer (eg. Oblivion, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, etc), what type of character do you build?
Is the character a reflection of yourself? Same eyes? Same nose? Even same manners?
Do you create a character that is a total opposite of you? Different sex? Evil/Good?
Or do you create a character that looks fun to play? Camp-looking moustache warrior in Dragon age? A stumpy, fat female Commander Sheppard in Mass Effect?
Post your piccies if you have any!!!
:D

My main character usually has the same appearance in all my RPGs/MMOs. Its the same character I have had for over 30 years, ever since P&P days.

Shoulder length auburn/deep red hair, short/medium height, short/medium build, auburn/deep red goatee. Blue eyes, medium-large nose.

Its the same good guy character that I've had for decades. I also have an "evil" character which I have had for decades and I always use the same appearance for him too.

Extremely short grey/white/blond hair, glasses if available, very skinny, tall, green eyes, clean shaven.

Probably easier if I post a few pics when I get home :)

I just cannot do evil characters though. Games tend to make them too black and white. If I want someone evil, I want it to be because they think they're right, or they know they're doing wrong, but doing it for the greater good, or the person deserved it etc.

Games tend to be too simple : kill the cute kitten ? / save the cute kitten?

I generally hit the random options until I get something nice then tweak it a bit. Often the same options: long-ish brown hair, green eyes etc. Tend to play a good support caster. If you ask me the "evil" option generally not evil and just a jerk and often makes no sense.

Doesn't matter what game I play, I normally end up fashioning a hot redhead with shoulder-length hair, green eyes and that undeniable sway of the hips that 'm going to be spending most of the game looking at anyway.

I did make an assassin in aion recently who quite by random looks exactly like Stephen Segal, and as a result I just can't play him.

I have a templar who (quite intentionally) looks like Lucy Lui though, which kind of makes up for it :)

The main reason I started this topic was that I started to play Dragon Age for the first time yesterday and I created a warrior with long ginger hair and the biggest, camp tache that was available. The facial expression was constructed so that the character had a hell of a hooter for a nose and always smiled - infact looked like Obelix from the Asterix books.
But the suprising thing was that the start of the human game was all serious about warring families and brotherly love, but when the camera panned around to show my character I couldn't stop laughing!!!! You could almost compare it with a Hamlet play starring Borat in the lead role!!!
I'll post a piccie when I get home..
:)

If it's like DAO then they have too many options and I cant be arsed, so i just click "randomise" a lot then maybe change one or two things.

If its a lot more Cookie Cutter then i find one that suits the character im going to play.

Varies greatly, usually depends on how I want to play the game, whether I wwant to be a good guy or a bad guy, etc. I then pick an appearance that'll gel with my playstyle. I'm usually a lot more concerned with how my avatar looks in MMOs than in single-player games though.

Depends, In RPGs where there is an option not to play a human I will play as non human so obviously will look nothing like me :P

In the original Mass Effect I played default male Sheppard, my house mate played default female and I increasingly preferred the voice acting of female Shepard so in Mass Effect 2 I made custom female Shepard loosely based off my girlfriend.

In Dragon Age it depended on class, I play as a mage/wizard if its available in RPG and so I made female elf mage and made her look as hot as possible.

In WoW I played Tauren warrior which didn't have much customisation apart from hair colour.

I generally find female protagonists more endering than male ones so 80% of my RPG chars are women. I'm sucker for face creators and spend a good few hours creating a character before actually playing the game if it has one. I can't stand the stereotypical perfect beauty that a lot of games, especially Jap ones tend to push so I end up making someone more normal looking and work in some imperfections. Think Ripley from Aliens. Not your cookie-cutter 'play our free mmo game'-alike'.

MMO's are an exception though... That can be a bit weird.

Also, I reckon the best 'fairytale' ending in Dragon Age is with a Female Human. You just have to be able to put up Alistair.

Oh, and I did make a male shep in Mass Effect to start with but he sounded like a colossal **** so changed very quickly. Fem-shep was more hardass anyway.

Then again, I played a male in Jade Empire which suited the game better.

But the Wanderer in Fallout will always be male in my mind.

...Okay, let's start again: It depends on the game ;)

This is the kind of character I'll usually make if the beards don't look naff :

This is the unintentional Steven Segal lookalike :

And my attempt at lucy :)

I choose and create characters that i think look good, otherwise i won't feel comfortable playing a character that looks horrible.
