I haven't played my Xbox in about a year. Tbh, I barely bothered with it after I got a little bored of COD4...

However, lately I've had the urge to get back into playing, fired it up tonight with FEAR 2. Five minutes after playing, two red rings appear. I switched off, waited for a while, turned it back on, same happened again. Switched it off, left it for two hours, came back and I get the infamous RROD. Tried resetting several times but it's a goner. :( I'm apocalyptically gutted to say the least...

What now? I never expected this to happen, I barely touch the bloody thing?

I bought it from GAME in 2008(iirc?)

Pretty much similar position for me, got a text from my brother who has borrowed the machine saying RROD..

If you got it in 2008, dig up the receipt, the RROD failure is covered on a 3 year warranty

Would the retailer deal with it or Microsoft directly?

I don't know too much about the RROD issue but this just seems insane, even when I got the Xbox, I hardly played it.

I'm not entirely sure, when my first xbox broke (graphics issue) I took it back to gamestation and got it replaced, though I think that was within the 1st year. Phone up Game tomorrow and ask who to return it to

Will do.

Just checked my box, I have everything including receipt which states November 2008. So, every model is covered by a 3 year warranty?

Right this is incredibly odd!

I just took the cables out of the console to check the rear serial code for requesting a repair. Entered my details, stuck the cables back in and before hitting that submit button checked the console one last time.

It's working  How do you go from RROD to working?

I shall test a game and see how it goes...

EDIT:

It's just overheat and crashed again with two lights. :(

Yeah, it overheat twice and finally died, showing the three red lights.

It sits by itself, near a window with an abundance of ventilation, there's no way it would overheat unless a hardware failure.

My out of warranty 360 overheated due to the amount of dust inside it. As it was out of warranty I just cracked it open and gave it a hoover. It might be the same issue with yours but because you got 3 red rings I would just request a repair with Microsoft, no point invalidating your warranty seeing as it's still covered against 3RROD for another year(ish).
