anyone running openVPN on the router in client and server mode? Can i do it in both mode?

also what firmware to use - Merlin or DD-WRT?

lastly, how is the wifi performance on this. My VR900 is amazing in terms of speed. I can get 300-400mbps if I am at the same floor level with 1 solid wall.

AC68 uses the same CPU/RAM as my AC56, it depends on the encryption type as to how well it will perform in VPN terms. Wifi was generally fine for me - but I tend to use my Unifi set-up as the coverage is better and realistically most of my mobile device usage is WAN limited. I use Merlin's FW.

Can't comment on the VPN stuff as I don't use it, but my AC68U does well on the wireless side of things. If you're talking about sync speeds, I see 866mb sync speed on my Nexus 6P with one thick wall in between, about ~3 to 5m away from the router. Realistically though I don't think you'll see much of a difference between it and the VR900.

how do you find out the wifi sync speed on 6P?

My Asus RT-66U really struggled with running OpenVPN at a router level. Seriously slowed my speeds. I switched to the same VPN at a computer level and speeds were maximal again. I haven't tried a router level VPN using the Merlin software I am currently using.
