I recently bought an Asus RT-AC68U to manage the wifi whilst my Virgin Superb was turned to modem only

The wired connection on RT-AC68U is perfectly fine, the wifi though is very hit and miss. Connectivity drops out and speeds are very hit and miss

Are there any potential causes to this and what can i do to fix?

I've just ran speediest on my MBP with my VM 150mb connection and got results of 60.36mbps download, 4.79mbps and ping of 479ms

Sorry, what do you mean when you say separating?

I've recently had a Nest installed that was on the 5ghz that kept dropping signal, so I've moved that to the 2.4ghz one and seems a lot more stable.

What is the difference between 2.4ghz and 5ghz?

Seperating as in giving them both different names, so they will appear as two seperate wireless access points.

2.4GHz has great range but is pretty congested since it's commonly used by everyone else for their wireless.

5GHz is less congested and offers faster speeds, but has weaker penetration strength compared to 2.4GHz so it has significantly less range.

Sorry! yeah they have asus and asus_5g for two different names

I switched the Nest to 2.4 and that seemed ok, but has since lost connectivity and I can't see that online now
5ghz will seem ok, on my MBP i'm getting 94mbps but the connection seems to drop after a short while

What firmware are you on? Mine's on 3.0.0.4.380_1842 (haven't updated to the latest) and the wireless on it has been rock solid for me.

I don't know if there's anything for OSX, but for Android you can use this app to check for the best wifi channel, and Windows has this: https://www.vistumbler.net/

Ideally you will want to select the least congested channel, and one without any overlapping ones if possible (for example, channel 1 overlaps 2,3,4 and 5).

The firmware on mine is 3.0.0.4.380_3831 and it's what was installed from purchase a couple of weeks ago

I tried the scanner last night. 2ghz looked OK with no one on the same channel, my neighbours were on the same 5ghz channel (44) so have changed this to 62 as nothing clashed with that
So far seems ok
