RT-n66U drop out

Hi guys,

I am having a really strange problem.

I have a new Asus RT-N66U, it is a great router but it seems to cut out every 12-24 hours.

When it cuts out, only some of the devices on the network disconnect, and all the devices are using 2.4ghz (I have 5ghz disabled).

It is usually my phone which cuts out totally, but my PC does it too sometimes. When it happens to my phone, it loses connection, but then sometimes re-connects, but then is more or less instantly booted off again. When it happens to my PC (which is using a wireless adapter), the yellow exclamation mark comes up in front of the LAN symbol (not the wireless signal strength bars), and the network is visible, but it won't let me connect to it.

The only way to fix it is to restart the router, which solves it for another 12-24 hours.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that I have it in forced 40mhz in order to get 300mb/s to my PC, this enables me to get upwards of 95% of wired speed from my 120mb/s connection with my ISP.

But on the other hand, I think that it can't be the fact that it is on 40mhz because it works flawlessly for so long, and the network is actually visible when it disconnects.

The router is running in AP mode because my wireless gateway has no Bridge mode, something which is a bit of a pain also.

The firmware is also the latest, and is stock.

Any help?

Hi guys,

This is still happening, although not as bad. I forced 'N only' devices and I changed SSID. Now it still drops connection to devices, but will reconnect fine about 3 mins later.

During those three mins, connecting on my phone results in a connection, but then drops about 4 seconds later. On my PC, it just won't let me connect to the network.

It only happens of a few of my devices and it happens to random devices, and I have about 10 connected.

I don't have too much knowledge when it comes to networking, but the behaviour of the router suggests to me that there is a problem with IP assignment? Something along those lines? This is impossible though because it is in AP mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Okay,

I did a factory reset this morning, on the latest Merlin F/W (I forgot to mention that I installed this in my last post).

I set all the settings to how I want (forced 40mhz, AP mode enabled, 5ghz disabled etc.) so I will see how it is from now on.

I do hope that this works because apart from the drop-outs, I get absolutely stellar performance from the router.

The absolute maximum on my 120 mb/s connection is 116.7 over ethernet, and I get this over wireless N with the computer being a good 20 feet away from the router with a wall in between:

That's with a TP-Link TL-WN822N.

So it just dropped again.....

I'm going to put it back to normal mode instead of AP mode, and see if it helps, because I don't remember this happening when I first had the router and it wasn't in AP mode.

The only thing I fear is double NAT-ing, which I hear can be potentially troublesome. Is it a real problem? My ping is the same and my speeds are still the same when the router isn't in AP mode, so I don't really see any superficial difference...

I would have my modem, a cisco epc3925, in bridge mode to stop the double nat, but my ISP have put custom firmware on it and I can't find the bridge option for the life of me.
