Define "true potential". If it is speed and hardcore performance, any chip will perform faster with more cooling. Just how physics work. The true potential(in terms of speed vs. thermals vs. power consumption) of Vega lies in tweaking the settings of your Wattman profile. Just wait for AIB to have a fair comparison with any 1080. The partners will be able to tweak the card based on their cooling. First signs of Asus Strix are promising ;)

The Strix isn't even overclocked, so you might as well say its just a reference card with a different cooler, its a fail, so looking like the custom cards, will just be able to hold the stock clock/boost clock better, as they have a better cooler, big deal.

We've also heard nothing from other AIBs about custom cards, nothing from Sapphire about a Tri-X, no Gigabyte Aourus etc..., all we know is, Asus are doing a reference clocked card with a Strix cooler, thats going to be even more expensive than the ref card, due to the Asus TAX.

Unless he doesn't mind being demoted.

When they take the PR work he's done into consideration I doubt he'll have a choice.

I hope we don't find that AMD supplied the AIB's with the C0 revision chips that they couldn't or didn't use in the reference air cooled cards. If C0 was deemed unsuitable for the air-cooled reference cards the Strix cooler might struggle to keep it in check at higher clocks.

Boss goes on holiday after a extremely busy year is a non story...
He is not on holiday, he had a holiday, he is on a leave of absence and the CEO has taken over his job.

Such senior people would never be allowed a vacation for so long, in fact a 4 week vacation like he already have is basically unheard of at that level in the US.

If he was on vacation he would not be replaced by Lisa Su, he would still be available for important calls and meetings.

The 3870? That was not a good card. Better than the HD2900 (what wasn't?) but it picked up from the 4870 onward (still have that 512MB beauty somewhere).

The 3870 fixed the 2900 XT issues and was quite cheap. 3870 X2 was possible, and which was on equal feet with Nvidia's top dogs.

The problem is the Radeon 6970 2gb, 7970 and 290x were all good cards. AMD lost market share under these cards so it's not just Hardware that's the problem as arguably the 7970 and 290x were better hardware to what Nvidia had at the time especially as time went on. Both these cards also offered 1gb more Vram than the competition. The 3870/x2 were not great cards either. I owned a 3870 and would much rather have had a 8800gt for similar money but it was sold out and i needed a card asap.

The 3870 was overall a better card for AMD than 6970. With the 3870 AMD began the recovery process, which unfortunately ended with the 5870. The 6970 was the beginning of a decline.
