RTS Games

TBH only generals / zero hour. Have had all the C&C games since they started.
Do like the war games / RTS style....

Is art of war any good? I really am looking for something as playable and slick as generals, with the hectic / too much to do / 'panic station' moments I get when going head to head with a mate.

Is art of war a similar type of game? Not too into the civ AOE type games as they tend to be pretty slow from what I have seen....

i thought act of war was pants myself.
i did admittedly only play a few missions but they were very boring and short. all you had to do was keep clicking go go go and you would just wipe the enemy out in the mission, nothing like C&C imo.
dawn of war+winter assault(expansion) is good though

Dawn of War Gold Edition is definitely the best RTS I've played in recent years. Good graphics, nice FMV sequences, fast paced action, good units, nice control system, cool background/storyline etc.

In fact it's so good I've decided to buy one of Relic's older titles, Homeworld 2.

Rome total war is all you need, depending on your PC medieval might suit better.

Homeworld 2 was good put it was not quite as good as homeworld. That game was amasing in its day.

i would recomend Dawn of War.

As for Act of War i thought it was more of a C&C game than Generals was, it did get harder as you got more into the game, but it isnt some thing i would pick up and play often, imo

Dawn Of War is very good

And the 2nd expansion is coming soon for it as well,
2 more races Tau and a TBC other (my bet goes on necro or dark eldar)

I have not enjoyed the new Starwars game or the second Lord of the rings game, Id say stay clear but others will disagree.

Age of Empires 3 is currently my RTS of choice. Excellent, excellent game - if you are into multiplayer then it's a very econ driven, custom card specialising, statistical nightmare but it's really, really, really good fun when you are up to speed. Plus it just looks so delicious.

Battle for Middle-Earth 2 is also very good indeed. This is by the same team that did the Command & Conquer series and they have gone back to form after some 'innovative' changes they tried out for bfme1.

Rise of Nations should be out soon also, and that should be fairly big.

AOE3 is good but i have a couple of gripes with it basically to do with the fact that a rush is basically the only way to way the game or to fast fortress. You don't get many occasions where you can expand too much, since most of the play is based in level 2 and 3 civilisations. Some people might not like all the micro'ing you have to do aswell. On the plus side, the graphics are simply gorgeus and the cards is a very neat innovation.

I myself am eagerly awaiting the spiritual sequal of the best (IMO) RTS ever, Total Annihilation, in the form of Supreme Commander. Shame it's such a long way away.

No new ones but in this order:

StarCraft (naturally)
C&C: The First Decade
Total annihilation
WarCraft III
Dawn of War
Rome total war

Multiplayer is where it's at, I just don't understand how people are interested in single player RTS games.

Edit: added War3 in there.

Are you saying there is an active online Rome Total War multiplayer community?

I bought the game when it was released, loved it but was very disappointed with the multiplayer as it felt more of a tacked on add-on, I was especially disappointed with the lack of an econ.

I kind of shelved it after that as I am purely mp rts too.

When i questioned it on the official forums I was shouted down and told that single player was what this game was all about and no-one wanted mp and thats why it was just put in as an after thought.

Is this completely untrue?

The StarCraft multiplayer absolutely trounces the single player. The game was completely designed with multiplayer in mind. As for C&C... erm... well the music's still there :p
