Hi all

I have a friend looking to spend on a gaming rig. He is going for a card within a budget of ~£600 so I've suggested the RTX 2080 SUPER VENTUS XS which is on the BF deal here. Has anyone got any experience they could share around this card or would recommend a different card.

He'll be gaming on a 1440 144hz monitor and has a 3700X. Initially I recommended him go on to a 2070 Super gaming X trio as these are ~£500 and will be adequate for the monitor but just not sure on the smaller sized PCB for the 2080, do you lose much performance by going for the smaller card and are these incredibly noisy?

It probably is noisier but you can fix that easily with undervolting, and it will still be the best performance he can buy for that money by far. You need every % at QHD 144hz. He should get it while he can.

He would like warranty tbh but I personally have no issue with 1080tis second hand. Plus I wouldn't know where to source one from (don't have enough posts for MM yet although I've been a forum lurker for many years). Recently messed up on buying what I thought was a 2080ti secondhand... received a pile of paper, so I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about it

I believe @Boomstick777 has one of these and rates it.

Do a search on his posts about it.

What would you recommend then? Other than waiting for another new set of cards?
I would say either get a second hand card with warranty or something cheap enough that will do the job/not depreciate heavily to tied him over until the RTX 3000 series hits.

Even better though get him to google delayed gratification :p:D

Not everyone will agree with that though. There is no wrong or right really. If he has a decent amount of disposable income and not to bothered then grab a 2070S or something for now maybe. 2080S is not worth the extra money imo.

It’s the best 2080 Super deal around but do be quick as the stock is limited on these as is the stock on the free game codes, both are which won’t be available again once sold out in near future.

I heard these buggers are pretty hot and noisy, is that true?

Also, I don't know whether a 2080S is "worth it" now but I doubt the 3070 & 3080 will be the second coming that's 50% faster in everything like some believe. Unless AMD puts out something serious, we'll probably get another 10-15% perf on top of what we have and better RT with an enormous price tag. I hope I'm wrong, though.

How about a cheap second hand 1080Ti?

worst advice ever.

Spend £350-£450 on a second hand card. When he can get a 2070 super for £450 with COD and a brand new warranty.

OP get a 2070 super. i game at 1440p and 165 hz and i just bought a 2070 super. waste of money going for the 2080 super as the extra £150-£200 you get at best 5-15% boost.

Agreed, ive said it many times, the only cards worth getting now, are the 2070 Super, or the 2080Ti.

It'll handle 1440p fine, im using one at uw 3440x1440, which its handling fine.
