RTX 3090 - Potential Scam...

You guys make it sound like its the hardest thing in the world.

The only check the retailer or nvidia can do really is to ask for proof of purchase. If the OP got the invoice from the seller, that's taken care of.

Now its a simple 'white lie' to get the rest. "The card was a gift from my brother in law", "I have moved house since" or any other perfectly reasonable reason why you no longer want the replacement card sent to the address on the invoice.
The name is no problem either.... as said either pretend it was a family member or heck create an email account with that name...

The FE retailer could make you jump a few more hoops I guess, as they would have the persons CC on file. But if going direct to nvidia for the RMA, there would be next to no checking they can do beyond the person providing the invoice and serial number of the card they have.

Again... its like the whole replace thermal pads. Only provide the information necessary to get your RMA claim approved. So dont go telling them you bought the card on ebay.

And people do get very bent out of shape about loosing a warranty on a computer part. None of you ever bought a 2nd hand car privately? Those come without any kind of warranty too... and even the cheapest of car probably cost more than a 3090FE.

This used to work most of the time. But, with the things have tightened up in the last few years, I wouldn't take a chance on buying an expensive GPU second hand unless I knew the person or at least from some trusted place like the Members market here. I would need to be sure that I could a hold of the Original owner in case I needed them for issues with the Warranty. Even EVGA have changed their policy to a much stricter one. You might be lucky and get away with doing what you say, but, I wouldn't take a chance.

AS for your comparison to second hand cars, it's not the same thing at all. Would you buy a second car from a private Ad, pay the money and get it delivered without ever seeing the car in real life? No, you wouldn't. If you didn't want to be scammed you would go see the car, check all the numbers/MOTS etc and make the sure they match the online records. And you would get a mechanic you trust to take a look at the car(well, I would)

Im just curious what checks a retailer can reasonably do to confirm you really are the original buyer?

And my car comparison is slightly tongue in cheek, but to run with it as you have: Buying a GPU from eBay is far more secure than buying that 2nd hand car privately, even IF you take your mechanic to check it over.
I can test the GPU at will at home and if its not working or otherwise as described, request to return it. If the car develops a fault I/mechanic buddy dint spot, well you got no recourse on the private seller. Tough luck.

I'd be more worried at the lack of warranty than the little bit of dust. I'm not sure I'd ever be brave enough to buy something high value off eBay unless it was from a legit store's eBay page.
That site has gone to s***, Personally would never sell anything on there

Does not look Ok to me, but why support the scalpers and buy the card. Return it before it blows up and you loose out.

3090FE was sat in stock for over an hour today so no need to buy off scalpers for a higher price.

If that's the card your after then just be patient as you have atleast an hours window every 2-3 weeks to get one and they maybe add some tomorrow from today's cancellations.
